Subverting Narratives of Asian-American Representation in Advertising and Media
This book is the culmination of a year’s worth of research, design, blood, sweat, and tears. Submitted as my thesis for my master’s program, this book explores the harmful historical practices of representing Asian-Americans in advertising and popular media.
Providing both a written and visual history of these practices, it showcases where many of the racist stereotypes began and how they evolved with each emerging form of media. I also provide a deeply personal view of not only my experiences due to these portrayals, but the experiences of my family.
While the work to right these wrongs has made incredible progress in the last few years, the job is far from being finished. Going further than just the Asian-American community, use your voice in everything that you do to amplify, provide community, and advocate for historically underrepresented and marginalized communities.
